THE METHOD

How it works

Enter the start and end time on the 24-hour clock, the unpaid break and the number of shifts. A shift that ends earlier in the day than it started is treated as running overnight. Add an hourly rate to see the pay for all shifts before tax.

FormulaHours = (end time − start time − break) ÷ 60, adding 24 hours when the shift runs past midnight.
ASSUMPTIONS

Assumptions and limits

  • Times use the 24-hour clock. An end time earlier than the start time is treated as the next day.
  • Only unpaid break time is subtracted.
  • Pay is before tax and ignores overtime or night-shift rates.
  • Results are estimates based on the inputs and assumptions on this page, not professional advice.
  • Try this: in the example above, a 12% rise in “End hour (0–23)” changes the result by +25.0% and a 11% rise in “Start hour (0–23)” changes the result by -12.5%. Use “Save scenario A”, change one input and compare the two results side by side.
