THE METHOD

How it works

Pick a letter grade and the credit hours for each course; set credits to 0 for unused rows. The result uses the common US 4.0 scale, where A is 4.0, A− is 3.7 and B+ is 3.3. To include past terms, enter your previous cumulative GPA and the credits it covers.

FormulaGPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits. Cumulative GPA adds your previous GPA × previous credits to both parts.
ASSUMPTIONS

Assumptions and limits

  • Uses the common US 4.0 grade-point scale without A+ or weighted (honours) points.
  • Courses with 0 credits are ignored.
  • Schools convert percentages to letter grades differently, so check your own scale.
  • Results are estimates based on the inputs and assumptions on this page, not professional advice.
  • Try this: in the example above, a 10% rise in “Course 3 credits” changes the result by -0.4% and a 10% rise in “Course 1 credits” changes the result by +0.4%. Use “Save scenario A”, change one input and compare the two results side by side.
QUESTIONS

What does the worked example show?

With course 1 grade A, course 1 credits 3, course 2 grade B+, course 2 credits 3, course 3 grade B, course 3 credits 4, course 4 grade A−, course 4 credits 3, course 5 grade A, course 5 credits 0, previous cumulative gpa (optional) 0, credits already completed (optional) 0, the gpa for these courses is 3.46. Cumulative GPA: 3.46; Credits this term: 13; Total credits: 13; Grade points this term: 45.

What assumptions and limits apply?

This is an estimate based on the inputs and assumptions shown on this page, not professional advice. Check anything with financial, health or safety consequences independently.

Is my data private?

Yes. Calculations run in your browser and your numbers are not sent to a server. A share link contains the inputs you choose to share, so check it before sending it to anyone.

How is GPA calculated?

Each grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on), multiplied by the course credits, added up and divided by the total credits.

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?

Enter your previous cumulative GPA and the credits it covers. The calculator weights the old GPA and this term’s courses by their credits.
