THE METHOD

How it works

Enter the base and the exponent. Whole-number exponents mean repeated multiplication, negative exponents mean the reciprocal, and fractional exponents mean roots: 8^(1/3) is the cube root of 8, which is 2. A negative base needs a whole-number exponent, because a fractional power of a negative number is not a real number.

Formulabⁿ = b × b × … × b (n times). b⁻ⁿ = 1 ÷ bⁿ. b^(p/q) = (q-th root of b)^p. b⁰ = 1.
ASSUMPTIONS

Assumptions and limits

  • Results are real numbers; complex results from fractional powers of negative bases are not shown.
  • Zero to the power zero is treated as 1, the usual convention in algebra and computing.
  • Results larger than about 10³⁰⁰ are rejected rather than shown as infinity.
  • Results are estimates based on the inputs and assumptions on this page, not professional advice.
  • Try this: use “Save scenario A”, change one input and compare the two results side by side.
QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How is the result of the “Exponent calculator (powers)” calculated?

bⁿ = b × b × … × b (n times). b⁻ⁿ = 1 ÷ bⁿ. b^(p/q) = (q-th root of b)^p. b⁰ = 1.

What does the worked example show?

With base (b) 2, exponent (n) 10, the result is 1,024. Reciprocal (1 ÷ result): 0.0009765625; Square root of the result: 32.

What assumptions and limits apply?

This is an estimate based on the inputs and assumptions shown on this page, not professional advice. Check anything with financial, health or safety consequences independently.

Is my data private?

Yes. Calculations run in your browser and your numbers are not sent to a server. A share link contains the inputs you choose to share, so check it before sending it to anyone.

What does a negative exponent mean?

It means the reciprocal of the positive power. 2⁻³ = 1 ÷ 2³ = 1 ÷ 8 = 0.125.

What does a fractional exponent mean?

The denominator is a root and the numerator a power. 27^(2/3) is the cube root of 27 (which is 3), squared, giving 9.

Why is any number to the power of zero equal to 1?

Each step down in the exponent divides by the base: 2³ = 8, 2² = 4, 2¹ = 2, so 2⁰ = 1. The pattern holds for every non-zero base.
