one hundred and twenty thousand

Lakh and crore: one lakh twenty thousand

HOW IT WORKS

The rules

Each group of digits is read in turn: hundreds, then thousands, millions and billions, or in South Asia thousands, lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). British usage adds “and” before the last part under one hundred, so 105 is “one hundred and five”.

Cheque wording capitalises each word, writes the minor unit (paisa, cents, pence) after “and” and ends with “Only”, so nothing can be added afterwards. Amounts are rounded to two decimal places first.

Ask in plain words

The box on the Convert page answers the same questions as you type, for example “120000 in words”, “1994 in roman”, “255 in binary” or “0.375 as a fraction”.

QUESTIONS

Common questions

How do you write an amount in words on a cheque?

Write the amount in words with each main word capitalised, put the minor unit (paisa, cents or pence) after “and”, and end with “Only” so nothing can be added. In Pakistan and India the amount usually starts with “Rupees” and uses lakh and crore, so Rs 1,20,000 is “Rupees One Lakh Twenty Thousand Only”.

What is the difference between a lakh and a million?

A lakh is 100,000 and a crore is 10,000,000, or 100 lakh. A million is 1,000,000, so 10 lakh make a million and a crore is ten million.

Should I write “and” inside a number?

British English puts “and” before the last part of a number, as in one hundred and five; American English usually leaves it out. Cheque wording here leaves it out except before the minor unit.
